Coaching question resolved, Brown in DFB focus
Hütter returns, Brown convinces: Eintracht on the verge of a new start
Eintracht Frankfurt has presented Adi Hütter as the new head coach – a decision that sends a signal for the sporting direction from summer onwards. At the same time, Nathaniel Brown moved into the spotlight in the DFB jersey: The left-back played the full 90 minutes for the national team in their 4-0 win against Finland in Mainz. Both together tell the story of a club facing a reorganization – with a clear leadership decision on the sidelines and a professional who is visibly expanding his role in the highest competition.
At Eintracht Frankfurt, two central topics are coming to a head at the start of June: Brown's full involvement in the national team and Hütter's return. The 56-year-old is taking over Eintracht again and has signed a three-year contract. According to the club, the second term will begin on July 1, 2026 and run until June 30, 2029. Source
Brown seizes the stage in the DFB team
For Brown, the evening in Mainz was more than just another friendly appearance. In the 4-0 win against Finland, Germany played dominantly in front of their home crowd, with goals scored by Deniz Undav (2), Florian Wirtz, and Jamal Musiala. Source Brown played the entire match at left-back in the back four – and provided arguments that he is not just along for the ride in the national team, but is seriously competing athletically.
His performance matched a development that is particularly important for a modern full-back: Brown repeatedly joined in combinations, offered solutions in the build-up, and actively sought to connect with the attacking play. He missed a big chance – and then assessed the scene himself. “That annoys me,” Brown said with a smile, “maybe next time at the World Cup.”
The evening gains additional relevance due to the competition on the left side. Brown described the duel with David Raum as an “open competition.” For an Eintracht professional, this is a remarkable assessment: Not the nomination itself, but a full appearance in a clearly defined hierarchy is the real currency in the national team.
In addition to Brown, other Frankfurt players were also on international duty. Ritsu Doan played 45 minutes in Japan's 1-0 win against Iceland, while Aurèle Amenda remained on the bench in Switzerland's 4-0 win against Jordan.
Hütter's return is the clear course setting
The bigger Frankfurt news remains the coaching question – and its answer. With Hütter, Eintracht brings back a coach who knows the club, the environment, and the mechanics of the location from his first term (2018 to 2021). The decision is therefore less a reach into the archives than a strategic commitment: Frankfurt is relying on a coach whose playing philosophy is based on intensity, transitions, and bold attacking principles – and who is also experienced enough to remain pragmatic in different phases of the game.
Sporting director Markus Krösche justified the choice with a clear profile: “Adi Hütter stands for courageous attacking football, clarity, and discipline. He has shown at his previous clubs that he can combine fast transition football with possession.”
For the club, this formulation is not just PR, but a hint at the expectations: Frankfurt does not just want to be reactive, but wants to be recognizable again through style and attitude – regardless of whether the team is rotating during a Europa League week or has to find solutions against deep-lying opponents in the Bundesliga.
The new start depends on sporting credibility
Decisive for Hütter's second term, in addition to the contract, is above all how he deals with his own history. The departure in 2021 to Borussia Mönchengladbach left its mark in Frankfurt – also because of statements that many fans understood as a slight against the club. Hütter has since publicly described that phase as a mistake and made it clear that he regrets the communication at the time. This shifts the tone of the return: away from justifications, towards a new start that will only work if it is perceived as credible.
Hütter himself also relied heavily on the emotional connection upon his return – without lowering expectations: “For me, it is something very special and emotional to be Eintracht's coach again. The time we had together in Frankfurt shaped me and I have never forgotten it.” He also added a sentence that frames the return in sporting terms: “Looking back, I always felt that I wasn't finished yet.”
This creates a double finding for Frankfurt that points beyond the day. On the pitch, Brown moves further into the spotlight with a convincing DFB performance, thereby also strengthening his position within the club structure. In addition, Eintracht has resolved the central leadership question – and thus laid a foundation on which squad planning, role allocation, and ultimately the playing philosophy for the coming season can be built.
Brown's performance and Hütter's return do not yet mark sporting success. But they give the summer a direction: visibly showing performance – and connecting it with a clear, reliable line on the coaching bench.
