Digital Independence Day: Free Alternatives for an Independent Digital Future
How can digital tools be used without becoming fully dependent on large IT corporations? At the Digital Independence Day in Cologne, the Chaos Computer Club shows which alternatives exist to Google, Meta, Microsoft, and other dominant platforms. The event is particularly aimed at interested beginners who want to practically discover digital self-determination.
Understand Digital Alternatives
The focus is on applications and concepts that strengthen data protection, transparency, and control over one's own data. Visitors will receive guidance in their digital everyday life and get to know ways to complement or replace well-known services with independent or collaboratively developed solutions.
Try Out, Compare, and Engage in Conversation
The workshop combines understandable information with practical exchange. Those who bring their own device can directly test the presented alternatives and gather experiences. This creates an open event atmosphere where questions are explicitly part of the event experience and digital independence becomes tangible.
The Chaos Computer Club as an Experienced Partner
The cooperation with the Chaos Computer Club Cologne adds professional depth to the Digital Independence Day. The Chaos Computer Club was founded in 1981 and has been addressing information freedom, data protection, transparency, and the societal impacts of modern technologies for decades. Its events combine technical expertise with critical context and understandable knowledge transfer.
Digital Workshop at the Central Library
The event takes place in the Interim of the Central Library and is part of the Digital Workshop series. The format stands for practical event planning, approachable target audience engagement, and a lively connection between library, digital education, and societal dialogue.
The Digital Independence Day thus offers more than an introduction to alternative software: it creates space for exchange, new perspectives, and concrete first steps towards greater digital self-determination. Those who want to consciously choose digital tools and get to know independent solutions will experience an informative and practical afternoon in Cologne.
