Claudia Kemfert brings the energy question right into the literary heart of Cologne with Short Circuit

On September 26, 2026, a precisely thinking economist meets an audience at the Interim of the Central Library expecting more than a classic reading: Claudia Kemfert speaks in conversation with Sebastian Trepper about her new book Short Circuit – How We Are Squandering Our Energy Future. This event is part of the cultural program and the Climate Festival Cologne, merging literary intensity with political current affairs. The event begins at 4:00 PM at Hohe Straße 68-82 in 50667 Cologne. An evening between analysis and author encounter

Claudia Kemfert represents a language that clarifies rather than obscures economic contexts. As head of the Energy, Transport, Environment department at DIW Berlin and a professor of energy economics and energy policy at Leuphana University, she brings scientific authority to the stage. Her award-winning work and books make her a voice that resonates in cultural discourse far beyond disciplinary boundaries. ([claudiakemfert.de](https://www.claudiakemfert.de/biografie/))

Why this reading is relevant both literarily and socially

Short Circuit connects current analysis, linguistic art, and public debate. Especially in the context of a Climate Festival, the evening creates a special reading atmosphere: It revolves around energy policy, the pressing issues of our time, and how complexity can be translated into a clear, accessible narrative. The Interim of the Central Library provides a fitting setting, as the city library describes the place as a space for reading, learning, lingering, and a comprehensive event program across five floors.
